Jessica Bal is an independent documentary photographer, filmmaker, and educator whose personal work often explores womxn’s issues and identity. She is passionate about projects that involve cross-disciplinary collaboration, deep community engagement, and reciprocal approaches to storytelling.
Jessica has produced work for The New York Times, BuzzFeed News, VICE, The Miami Herald, CBSN Originals, WIRED, Narratively and others. She is the recipient of two grants from the International Women’s Media Foundation, and was a Magnum Foundation Fellow and a Fledgling Fund Fellow at the Double Exposure Film Festival. In 2016, she was selected for the Eddie Adams Workshop and the New York Times Portfolio Review.
She also coordinates education programming at United Photo Industries (home of the annual, outdoor Photoville festival) and manages the digital archive of documentary photographer Susan Meiselas. Jessica received her master’s degree from CUNY Graduate School of Journalism and holds a B.A. from Tufts University.
