John Scully joined the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism in January 2020 after a more than 30-year career as a public safety professional both in law enforcement and in higher education.
As a police officer, John served with the Paramus Police Department in New Jersey for nearly 28 years in a variety of roles, rising to the position of operations division commander.
He continued his public safety career within higher education, first with Sussex County Community College as director of campus safety and most recently as deputy director of public safety at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
He specializes in many aspects of safety and security with a concentration in emergency preparedness for higher education, including active-shooter response, de-escalation techniques, defensive tactics, and crisis management.
John earned a Bachelor of Arts in Individualized Studies with a concentration in Public Administration and a Master in Administrative Science from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
