Karen Pennar has been co-director of the Center for Community and Ethnic Media since 2015 and Editor of Voices of NY, its flagship website, since 2014. She was also project director for CCEM’s media directory, Many Voices, One City, published in 2013.
As CCEM co-director, she oversees editorial content, designs specialized training programs, and develops strategy for the center’s work on behalf of the more than 300 community and ethnic media outlets in the NYC metropolitan area.
As Voices of NY editor, she directs story selection and coverage for the site, which extracts and translates the best work of the community and ethnic press and publishes original work from freelancers and CUNY J-School students.
Previously, Karen worked at BusinessWeek magazine, holding numerous positions including economics editor and senior writer. She also worked in the healthcare field for five years and has written plays.
Karen has a B.A. in economics from Barnard College and a Master of Public Health from Yale University.
