Ralph Ortega, a reporter with more than 25 years experience, is currently participating in a project for Documented, a non-profit news site looking to provide unprecedented coverage of New York City’s immigration courts.
Documented has reporters in the courts five days a week for three months, to document as many cases as possible. The goal of the project is to shine a light on the opaque practices of the federal immigration courts and collect data that will be used for an investigative series. The project may also lead to a landing page that will feature highlights of the goings on in court from the previous day.
Ortega also has reported for the New York Daily News, the Star-Ledger and the Asbury Park Press and served as editor-in-chief of OnWallStreet, an award-winning financial news magazine and website. His breaking news and investigative work has taken him on assignment across the U.S., Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Mexico. He covered the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks and landed a world exclusive with the father of Elian Gonzalez, the child embroiled in an international custody battle involving the U.S. and Cuban governments.
A graduate of New York University, Ortega is a native New Yorker, the son of immigrant parents from Cuba and Chile and the proud father of four children.
