Associate Professor Wayne Svoboda served for 10 years as director of reporting and writing at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. He joined the Newmark J-School in 2006 after having been director of the journalism program at Queens College.

Before joining Queens in 2003, Svoboda was an assistant professor of journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and editor of the Columbia News Service.

An experienced reporter, Svoboda has served as the East Coast correspondent for Time magazine, the Africa Editor at The Economist newspaper of London, and staff writer and Saturday state editor at The Des Moines Register.

Articles he has written as a freelance journalist have appeared in many publications, including The Wall Street Journal and Institutional Investor. Svoboda is also a Fulbright Scholar who has taught courses in American studies and journalism in Russia and the Czech Republic.

He holds an M.S. in Economic History from the London School of Economics, an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, and a B.A. from Iowa State University.

2019: Consultant to a “Civilians on the Battlefield” program created by retired Army officers to teach soldiers in conflict zones what to look for when dealing with journalists
