The Radio Television Digital News Association honored six CUNY J-School alums with Edward R. Murrow Awards for their work in broadcast and digital journalism.

WAMU 88.5 won in the Continuing Coverage category for 2011 graduate Carmel Delshad’s stories about Nabra Hassanen, a 17-year-old Muslim woman from Northern Virginia who was murdered on her way to mosque, and how the community coped.

“WAMU covered the story from the first news of Hassanen’s death, focusing later on the community outreach toward her mosque, and her emotional funeral and vigils in her honor. As the spotlight moved on from the teen’s death, WAMU stuck with the story, speaking with Hassanen’s friends on how they are dealing with her loss, and to her parents about why they cast doubt on the “road rage” incident, instead believing her religion made her a target,” WAMU said.

The GroundTruth Project’s podcast season “The Fix” produced by Nicole Lewis, ’16, Michael O’Brien, ’16, Noah Caldwell, ’16, Stephanie Daniel, ’16, and Joaquin Cotler, ’16, also won a Murrow Award in the News Documentary category.

“The Fix” explored what caused the opioid crisis in New York City , what’s being done about it, and how denial and stigma are fueling a record number of overdose deaths.
