Pat Smith (he/him) is an M.A. Journalism student with a B.A. in English from Rutgers University–Newark. As a culture reporter at EnVi Media, his published works include features on AAPI and LGBTQ+ creatives, independent businesses, nightlife, and more. He is also a poet, community organizer, and proud to be born and raised in New Jersey. After J-school, Pat hopes to work in arts and culture reporting full time, then eventually explore book publishing, archiving, and education.

Newmark J-School Student Directory Photo, ID Card & Press Pass

The photo you upload will be used for the Student Directory, your ID card, and your Press Pass. For scholarship recipients, photos may also be shared with donors. Please review and follow the photo requirements below carefully. Submissions that do not meet these guidelines will need to be updated before they can be approved.

Photo Requirements
-Submit a color photo, taken in the last 6 months.
-Use a clear image of your face. Do not use filters commonly used on social media.
-Use a plain white or off-white background.
-Submit a high-resolution photo that is not blurry, grainy, or pixelated.
-Take off your eyeglasses for your photo to avoid any glare.
-Have someone else take your photo. No selfies.
-Do not significantly retouch, filter, or digitally alter your appearance.
-Have a neutral facial expression or a natural smile with both eyes open.
-Face the camera directly with full face in view.

Program Credit Sequence

Required First Semester Courses - You can deviate from the semester credit sequence above, however, it is crucial to complete the following list of first semester courses because they serve as prerequisites to advanced courses taken after the 1st semester. View the list of required courses for your program below.

Intro to Video Reporting is a required foundational course offered on multiple days and times. One section is designated as Advanced Intro to Video Reporting and uses the Canon C100 camera. The curriculum and assignments are the same across all sections. However, the advanced section uses the Canon C100 which is the same camera used in second- and third-semester video courses. Students with prior video experience or those planning to take additional video courses at the Newmark J-School may wish to enroll in the advanced section.

You will be assigned an Academic Advisor and a Faculty Mentor. Academic Advisors advise you on degree requirements and registration to help keep you on track to graduation. Faculty Mentors discuss your overall career choices, professional goals, and how they align with courses you might want to register for. In order to match you with a Faculty Mentor during your first semester, please indicate your journalism area(s) of interest.
