Inauguration Coverage, FDNY cutbacks and New Alumni Bylines

I’d say welcome back, but I’ve seen just about everyone over the last month, thanks to our great January Academy sessions. For a break, it’s been a very busy time – and here are some of the clips to prove it:

  • Maya Pope-Chappell turned her ticket to the inauguration into a journalistic opportunity. She filed a video report for WABC, Channel 7.
  • A bunch of our reporters, without tickets, headed to Washington and inauguration-related events in New York, contributing photos and other material to the News Service. Special shoutouts to Indrani Datta for helping organize the student-driven Washington effort, and to Candice Johnson for helping out in the Newsroom.
  • Rachel Geizhals localized a citywide issue – FDNY cutbacks – while still managing to give the piece some scope. Her story made the Brooklyn Eagle.
  • Collin Orcutt contributed a video report about the Spalding HoopHall Classic to Sports Illustrated’s high school sports site.
  • Karina Ioffee’s audio report about a microlender helping small businesses in Queens made the News Service. She’s also been stringing for the Times, and shared a byline in the Daily News with Damiano Beltrami for their piece about businesses that share storefronts. Damiano, meanwhile, put together a story and an audio slide show about the cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe for the United Nations Association USA website.
  • Speaking of the Daily News, Serge Kadinsky’s name has been showing up in the paper lately – including a solo byline on this story about the planned closing of a popular discount store in Queens.
  • Joel Schectman wrote an article for the News’ Bronx section about a new high school coping with dual tragedies. He shared a byline with Ben Fractenberg on this weather story.
  • Mirva Lempiainen’s travel piece about great train journeys found a home in amNew York.

Meanwhile, our latest alumni are already making their mark:

  • The print and video portions of Mathew Warren’s capstone package about monks in the Bronx made The New York Times.
  • Dan Macht, who recently started at NBC Local Integrated Media, wrote about efforts to encourage people to do volunteer work on Martin Luther King’s birthday.
  • AnnMarie Costella wrote a freelance piece about a Bensonhurst do-gooder for the Brooklyn Eagle.

Here’s to the start of what I know is going to be a great Spring semester.
