The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism has launched a web site that covers sports. But Box Score Beat, as it’s called, won’t be following teams or reporting on games. It will focus on analyzing sports journalism instead.
Box Score Beat Editor Collin Orcutt, a second-semester student who conceived the project along with the J-School’s Digital Media Manager Drew Gereats, said the multimedia site aims to provide “a close look at what the press covers, what it does not cover, and how it does so. Box Score Beat is also a conversation with the sports media makers: those who report from the sidelines, write during team road trips, and break down games in the studio.”
Orcutt has invited his classmates and professors to contribute to the site. Eventually he hopes to establish enough of a presence in the sports world to attract advertising. “If we focus on our product for a couple more weeks and start generating readership, we can make a case to potential advertisers that it would be worth the money,” he said.
