Some more great news as we end the semester: our News Service is a finalist in the Best College Newspaper Web Site category in the EPpy Awards, a national competition run by Editor & Publisher. The winner will be announced June 17, so stay tuned.
Here are some more examples of the kind of work that’s earning our school much-deserved recognition:
•Check out the latest issue of The Hunts Point Express. Hannah Rappleye writes about the 5th and 6th graders performing Shakespeare’s “As You Like It;” Azriel James Relph covers the reunion of members the Class of ‘85 at a local middle school who have created scholarships to send current students to prestigious prep schools; Nick Loomis contributes a photo layout, sound slides, and a story about Earth Day; and Amy Yensi profiles the woman who saved a local Little League to honor her father. You’ll also find stories by Joe Hirsch, Class of ’07.
•Jonathan Balthaser’s story-and-video package about karaoke night at Splash in Chelsea was featured on Next magazine’s web site.
•Colby Hamilton’s article about the latest struggles of independent pharmacies made City Limits.
•Melissa Cooper and Chika Moses combined on this video piece about a sand mandala made for the Dalai Lama. The story found a home on the News Service.
•Rochana Rapkins’ story about subway violence graced the covers of Our Town and the West Side Spirit.
•Krissy Dolor’s literary real estate story – the Brooklyn Heights townhouse where Truman Capote wrote “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is up for sale – was featured on NBC Local Integrated Media’s New York site.
•Teresa Tomassoni’s story about a special Mother’s Day ceremony at a Hindu temple was published in The Queens Courier.
•Walter Smith-Randolph’s coverage of a FDNY budget cuts protest found a home in the Queens Tribune.
•Our Fort Greene Team’s efforts were supplemented by this ghost-of-TV-past story from Katie Honan. Plus, Jordan Shakeshaft worked with Green Team member Perry Santanachote on this fashion piece.
•Speaking of The Times, Kerri MacDonald’s story about controversial changes planned for two schools that serve the deaf, hard of hearing, and children of deaf adults made the City Room blog. Meanwhile, a photo taken by Mariana Vasconcellos ran with this Times story about a medicine recall.
•Dan Tucker shared the byline on this Daily News story about how local businesses want to see LeBron James come to New York even more than Knicks fans. Bobby Melok wrote about a soccer player’s final foul.
To answer a frequently asked question: yes, the News Service is open for the summer. I’ll be around the office for much of the break – feel free to email. You also can call ) or just stop by to say hi. I’ll be going through various stories and projects, and posting lots of content in the coming days.
Meanwhile, please keep sending me links as you build your portfolios over the summer. This note is a great way for the J-School community to keep up with everyone’s progress.
