Three alumni from the first class of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism will spend a week in South Africa on an independent project documenting the 2010 World Cup. They aim to cover the soccer tournament through blogs, tweets, videos, and photos. Fans can follow their reports on the CUNY J-School’s RoadTrip site and on Twitter.
The group includes Jego Armstrong, a television producer at Bloomberg News; Sebastian Bednarski, a producer/editor at CUNY Television; and Angela Hill, a producer with the Brian Ross Investigative Unit at ABC News.
In a recent letter to current students, Armstrong gave some background on the trip:
A year ago, two of my fellow alums and I – Sebastian Bednarski and Angela Hill – set forth to accomplish a mission first crafted four years ago as first-year broadcast students at the CUNY JSchool. That mission: be in South Africa for the 2010 World Cup. After a year of moving and shaking, mission accomplished. We’ll be departing for Johannesburg on the week of June 7 – Angela will be leaving on June 8, and Sebastian and I on June 11 – and returning on June 18.
During the week, we will aim to not only capture the atmosphere of The Cup through blogs, tweets, picture/slide shows, and videos, but we also hope to bring you a piece of South Africa that may not be reported or shown during the overall coverage. Although we realize that a week is a small window to try and capture the highs and lows of this month-long extravaganza, we will do our best to encompass all the reasons this sport is regarded as the world’s game.
We will be using the CUNY RoadTrip web site for our published work, as well as tweeting.
Please feel free to shoot any suggestions, tips, assistance, etc. to us in the meantime. Also, we will be posting work prior to the trip. For example, Sebastian attended an autograph session with the Mexico World Cup team a few weeks ago at the Adidas store. Those photos and a slideshow are up now. We’ll also be linking relevant World Cup stories from other media outlets.
