•An ABC News investigation into statehouse corruption that Nadia Sussman participated in as an ABC-Carnegie Fellow was featured on Nightline. Go here, look for Wednesday’s show and click on the headline, “State Legislature Corruption.”
•Our News Service has been quite busy: Samantha Stark and David Montalvo examined, in a video piece, what food stamp recipients can buy. Walter Smith-Randolph and Christopher Schuetze took their video cameras up high for a look at turning roofs green by painting them white. Jessica Courtemanche and Janet Lawrence combined on a video story about an expected boost in Halloween business. Jose Bayona told the story of a two-year-old Brooklyn boy whose parents are pushing for a cure for the rare, fatal disease threatening his life.
Meanwhile, the first posts from News Service’s latest special project, covering the College Music Journalism festival, are up. Contributors, as of this writing, include Felipe Cabrera, Paul DeBenedetto and Liza Eckert. Expect to see more soon – including from Bianca Seidman–Shvarts, who got the ball rolling on the project.
•Speaking of music… Dale Eisinger also has been all over the CMJ festival – and found time to profile what he describes as the freak-folk/ psychedelic/minimalist art-band Prince Rama for New York Press.
•And speaking of special projects… members of the Harper-Armstrong Craft class sold profiles of local building workers to the West Side Spirit for a special section, both online and in print. The stories by Felipe Cabrera, Kara Bloomgarden-Smoke, Martin Leung, Tierney McAfee, Clifford Merin, Samantha Stewart and Patrick Wall can be found here.
•Katie Honan’s article about the greening of the old Fresh Kills landfill made Crain’s New York Business.
•Ashley Welch’s story about plans for the 50th anniversary of a Bronx deli found a home in The Riverdale Press.
•Megan Finnegan’s review of the Off-Broadway, one-man show “Through the Night” made Curtain Up.
•Kerri MacDonald’s story about a Nobel laureate’s visit to his alma mater, the Bronx High School of Science, was featured in The New York Times. Meanwhile, Shane Dixon Kavanaugh wrote about last week’s hail storm.
•Speaking of The Times, the latest on The Local includes contributions from, among others: Alex Abad-Santos, Al Barbarino, Lea Baron, Geoffrey Decker, Krissy Dolor, Spencer Freeman, Zachary Kussin, Emily Lavin, An Phung and Mitch Trinka.
•Azriel James Relph wrote a piece for Newsweek about how texting is changing philanthropy. Meanwhile, Vivian Doskow helped put together a photo gallery of unusual jobs.
•Matt Draper found a haunted house in Chelsea for amNew York.
•Ines Bebea, shared a byline on a Daily News story about finding bargains at car auctions. Sherry Mazzocchi profiled a former Broadway stage manager whose new role is helping battle bed bugs.
•Kara Bloomgarden-Smoke’s story about a parking ticket, a lawmaker and his mom found a home in The Queens Courier.
