An unusually warm day brings another batch of hot stories:
•Carmel Delshad, Alva French and Kirsti Itameri ran into The New Yorker’s Hendrik Hertzberg in Astoria’s Little Egypt last Friday. He wound up using some of their work in a blog post – and gave the J-School a nice shoutout.
•On the same day, Dan Rosenblum interviewed members of the Egyptian community in Jersey City and quickly turned around a story and photo gallery for The Jersey Journal.
•Geoffrey Decker showed the value of follow up, going back at his bedbugs-in-schools scoop from last semester, and tracking down updated information. His latest story was featured on NBC New York.
•Alissa Ambrose’s article about the controversy surrounding “Gasland,” an Oscar-nominated documentary about hydro-fracking, made The Huffington Post.
•With the semester kicking into high gear, The Local is on the express track. Check out the latest, which includes contributions by, among others: Lea Baron, Jose Bayona, Cheryl Chan, Brendaliss Gonzalez, Celia Gorman, Zachary Kussin, Kyle McGovern, An Phung, Rochana Rapkins, Nicholas Rizzi, Ian Thomas, Mitch Trinka and Ichy Vazquez.
•Lily Rothman’s story about an accent coach in Queens made the News Service. Meanwhile, Tamy Cozier, Megan Izen and Selly Thiam teamed on a video piece about how outrage over the slaying of a gay activist in Uganda has reverberated all the way to New York.
•Thomas Chan’s story about galleries and the real estate market found a home in City Arts. Come on by my office for a look at the article.
•Debra Pangestu’s story and photos introducing Daily News readers to the Rugelach King of Harlem got great play in the paper’s new Uptown News section, as did Amy Kraft’s package on the revival of La Marqueta (come on my office to check out Amy’s piece). The Class of ‘10’s Shane Dixon Kavanaugh, meanwhile, scored a jailhouse interview with Maksim Gelman, who is accused of killing four people.
Speaking our alumni, our graduates have been extremely productive. A mere sampling:
•Shane and Lisa Riordan Seville shared the byline on a New York Press cover story about the great Brooklyn beer battle.
•Rima Abdelkader’s video profile of MTV’s first Twitter jockey, Gabi Gregg, made The Griot.
•Aisha Al-Muslim wrote a piece for Newsday about a notorious home up for sale.
•Damiano Beltrami and Carla Candia combined on story and slideshow about a Queens do-gooder for The Huffington Post.
•Mariana (Vasconcellos) Keller’s video piece about France’s planned ban on the face-covering veils worn by some Muslim women was featured on Time’s website.
•Dmitry Kiper’s profile of artist Eric Drooker made the cover of Current Biography.
•Jessica Simeone scored this New York Post exclusive about a jailhouse brawl involving a notorious inmate.
•Walter Smith-Randolph’s snow story led a recent edition of the WENY nightly newscast.
•Andrea Swalec has been busy at The Takeaway. Check out this piece she produced about a “spy cruise.”
•Margaret Teich’s Fashion Week video made the Marie Claire website.
