In response to the escalating financial crisis in Puerto Rico, the Ravitch Fiscal Reporting Program at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism is hosting a one-day seminar to strengthen the background knowledge of journalists who are covering, or are likely to cover, this increasingly important story.

The sessions will cover the island’s troubled economy, the contours of its growing fiscal problems, the debt and bond market and implications of a default, and the difficult legal issues that are on the horizon.

Key political and government officials are expected to participate, including financial experts from the New York Federal Reserve Bank. The speakers will provide in-depth background to help improve reporters’ stories and identify future avenues for reporting.

The program will pay travel and housing expenses for journalists outside New York.

Journalists interested in attending the conference need to fill out the application form here.

For more information, contact program director Greg David at greg.david@journalism.cuny.edu.

The deadline to apply is May 20, 2015.
