Seeking a Director of Alumni Services

STAFF VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT: DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI SERVICES

CUNY GRADUATE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM

The J-School’s Director of Alumni Services is responsible for the planning and implementation of programs and projects that strategically engage alumni and provide tangible benefits to alumni. This is a half-time position (20 hours/week) that reports to the associate dean.

The Director of Alumni Services is charged with engaging alumni to provide professional expertise and volunteer service; collaborating with colleagues in other offices (including, but not limited to Admissions, Development, Career Services, and Student Services) to create and maintain pathways for alumni participation that advance the goals of the J-School; and serving as a liaison between the Alumni Board and the school’s leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Work closely with the Alumni Board, arranging its meetings, ensuring strong and productive relationships between its members and the School’s leadership; serve as ex officio member of the Alumni Board
Plan, implement and promote alumni programs that support the School’s strategic plan and alumni needs, including class reunions
Ensure accurate and complete alumni database records; capture contact, biographical and career information of alumni via surveys, projects (e.g. alumni directory), correspondence, website, postal returns, etc.
Conduct regular assessments of alumni to inform strategic planning in the school
Establish and build relationships with a wide range of alumni, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; maintain regular communication with alumni via direct contact, email blasts, alumni web pages, and print publications
Educate graduating students about alumni benefits and engage them in programs
Partner with Director of Admissions to spearhead the introduction of alumni involvement in the admissions process; partner with the Director of Career Services to plan the growth and accessibility of career networking services for students and alumni; partner with faculty to recommend alumni guests for classes
Oversee and balance the budget for Alumni Relations; within the annual program budget, manage existing and/or additional alumni programs, services and communications
Provide resume review and job search assistance for alumni
Maintain and update alumni section and news on the J-School website

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree
At least two years working as a journalist
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively and courteously with colleagues throughout the school, alumni, other constituents and the public
Demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers
Demonstrably strong writing, planning and organizational skills
Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with the skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve institutional goals
High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information
Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines
