The CUNY J-School’s NYCity News Service took seven finalist spots in three categories – including Best College/University Website in the nation – in Editor & Publisher’s EPPY Awards competition.
Three News Service special reports are finalists in the Best College/University Investigative or Documentary Feature category:
- “Counterfeit Ed,” which examines the for-profit college industry.
- “The Missing,” which tells the stories of missing New Yorkers.
- “Stop the Mold,” a collaboration with the New York Daily News that exposes the scourge of mold in New York City public housing.
Three more News Service special reports are contenders in the Best College/University News or Event Feature category:
- “Lost Arts,” which profiles New Yorkers finding new rewards in old crafts.
- “Turning Point,” which examines the Bronx’ Hunts Point, a neighborhood in transition.
- “Without a Badge,” which looks at alternatives to policing.
Contest winners are slated to be announced Oct. 28.
The News Service, which previously took home Best College/University Newspaper Website honors in the 2013 EPPYs competition, won two other high-profile national awards last month. “The Missing” garnered an Online Journalism Award at the Online News Association’s convention in Los Angeles. The News Service also won the first ever MOEy award at the Society of Professional Journalists’ national Excellence in Journalism confab.
The NYCity News Service, which debuted in 2007, feeds student stories on New York City neighborhoods and issues to news outlets of various types and sizes, and produces multimedia special reports, sometimes in collaboration with professional news organizations.
In recent years, the News Service has collected dozens of honors from journalism competitions run by the Online News Association, eduStyle, Editor & Publisher and the Society of Professional Journalists.
