Wonbo Woo, an Emmy Award-winning producer who has helped so many CUNY J-School students over the years as a broadcast coach, is returning to the school as Broadcast Journalist in Residence for the 2016-2017 academic year.
He will be teaching a section of the Broadcast Deadline course this fall, as well as coaching, working with Visual Journalism Director Travis Fox and his faculty on broadcast-related events, and helping to further develop our broadcast curriculum.
Woo spent the past year in Boston, where he was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.
Previously, he worked for three and a half years at NBC’s Nightly News, where he wrote, edited and produced news and feature stories.
His coverage included the Republican and Democratic National Conventions and the Newtown, Conn. and Aurora, Colo. shootings.
He also produced and coordinated special multi-platform series and segments, including the 2015 series “Transgender Kids,” which reached more than 35 million people on Facebook alone; and the Emmy Award-winning 2014 series “Hooked: America’s Heroin Epidemic.”
Before joining NBC, Woo spent more than a decade at ABC News, where he was a producer for Nightline and World News with Diane Sawyer, Charles Gibson, and Peter Jennings.
He has reported from three dozen U.S. states and countries on five continents. His work has taken him to locations including the Galapagos Islands, Dubai, Madagascar, and Patagonian Chile.
He is a native of Boston and a graduate of New York University.
