For the first time, The New York Times Student Journalism Institute will take place in New York City with a residence at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.
The move to New York will facilitate deeper engagement between the students of the Institute and The Times, including its newsroom, resources and leadership.
Since its founding 13 years ago, the Institute has served as a two-week journalism “boot camp” for collegiate members of the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
Over the years, more than 400 students have graduated from the Institute, and 18 alums have been hired by The Times. Other students have gone on to work at BuzzFeed, NBC Digital, Fusion, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, USA Today and many other news organizations.
This year’s Institute will run from May 21 to June 5. On June 4, the students’ journalism works, which will include reports, editing, design and visual projects, will be published at NYTimes-Institute.com. The Institute will publish a newspaper on June 3.
