Martin Baron, executive editor of The Washington Post since 2013, will address graduates at the tenth commencement of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism on December 16.
The ceremony will take place at The TimesCenter on West 41st Street in New York City.
Baron has had a long, distinguished career in journalism, previously holding top editing positions at The Boston Globe, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Miami Herald.
He became a household name with the release of Spotlight, the 2016 Oscar winner for Best Picture. The film depicts The Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation of a sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church while Baron was editor.
The Globe’s 2003 Pulitzer for Public Service was one of 11 such prizes awarded to newspapers under Baron’s leadership.
Most recently, The Washington Post won the 2016 National Reporting award for a comprehensive study of fatal shootings by U.S. police officers.
“Marty Baron is known for his unwavering commitment to investigative reporting on subjects of great importance to our society,” says Sarah Bartlett, Dean of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. “As we celebrate our tenth year, it’s hard to think of a more fitting person to inspire our graduating students.”
Baron started his journalism career at The Miami Herald in 1976. A native of Tampa, Fla., he earned Bachelor’s and MBA degrees from Lehigh University.
