Melissa Noel ’12 is one of the winners of the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Global Media Competition, “Breaking Stereotypes on Labour Migration.”

Her story, Migration and Separation: Stories of “Barrel Children” for Voices of NY, was selected for excellence in reporting in the competition’s video/multimedia category.

The story highlights issues faced by children in the Caribbean left behind when parents move to another country and provide material support instead of emotional support and direct care.

The story also centers on The Barrel Stories Project, which records and shares these stories and is working to raise awareness about the effects of this common, but rarely discussed issue.

This year’s competition, which is a collaboration of the ILO and several other organizations including the International Federation of Journalists and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), received 210 applications from journalists and reporters from 69 countries around the world.

Noel was presented with her award at the International Labour Organization Office For The United Nations in New York City on December 19.
