Laura Rena Murray’s look inside the lives of transgender teens in New York City was published in the latest issue of Rolling Stone.

Reporting for “Trans, Teen and Homeless: America’s Most Vulnerable Population” was supported by our Urban Reporting Grants Program.

Murray spent several months following six homeless transgender teens as they navigated city shelters and the criminal justice system.

“Murray’s story is an often disturbing tale that offers a rare look inside the vulnerable, but resilient world of youth who dare to be different,” said Investigative Journalist in Residence Tom Robbins.

An estimated 70,000 transgender youths lack secure housing while HIV infections rates are highest for this population, many of whom are homeless.
