In December 2020, we published an anti-racist style guide for U.S. Spanish-language journalists, editors and newsrooms. This summer we created a short animated video about the guide (la guía) that can be found here.
At the 2021 Latino Media Summit, we hosted a conversation with two of the authors of la guía. You can watch the full conversation here.
The Spanish-language guide is the work of a group of journalists and academics, the majority of them Afro-Latinas, from several Spanish-speaking communities represented in the U.S. Their names and affiliations can be found here (on the last page). They engaged in a collective analysis of anti-Black racism in spoken and written Spanish in the country, examining a wide range of culturally-specific idioms and concepts and offering recommendations on usage and translation.
The Guía Antirracista was shared with Spanish-language newsrooms around the country, some of which are using it to train their journalists on how to better cover racialized communities and stories about racism. It is a public resource that anyone can use.
