New Quote Wall Better Reflects Diversity of Voices in Journalism

A year ago, Dean Sarah Bartlett asked the school’s Campus Life and Facilities Committee to revamp the wall of quotes opposite the security desk in the J-School lobby.

After many suggestions and much sorting and thought, the new wall is now up, with only one of the 16 quotes — by the late Oakland Tribune publisher and editor Robert C. Maynard — retained from the original group. The rest are from a diverse mix of journalists, including Nelly Bly, Ida B. Wells, Graham Lee Brewer of the Cherokee Nation, 2019 commencement speaker Massa Gessen, Frederick Douglass, 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Maria Ressa, and Univision’s Jorge Ramos, whose words appear in Spanish.

Many people contributed to this effort, but a special thanks goes to Campus Life Chair Emily Laber-Warren, Investigative-Journalist-in-Residence Tom Robbins, broadcast adjunct Susan Farkas, Associate Professor Bob Sacha, Latino Media Initiative Director Graciela Mochkofsky, and Chief Librarian Barbara Gray for giving their time and wisdom to this important project.
