New York, NY — June 27, 2024 — The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism is thrilled to announce the Guardian US Scott Trust Fellowship in partnership with The Guardian US. The nine-month paid fellowship with full benefits and $65K annual salary will be geared toward early-career journalists who recently graduated from the Newmark J-School.

The Guardian is a leading global news organization dedicated to breaking news and investigations. The Guardian US strives to cover communities that mainstream media have long ignored. The fellow will be expected to follow that mission.

“Our alumni are trained to approach reporting with precision, nuance, and empathy,” said Graciela Mochkofsky, Dean of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. “Through this fellowship, they will build on this important work and contribute new perspectives to The Guardian newsroom.”

The program will offer fellows hands-on training in the newsroom and the opportunity to work with other Guardian journalists and editors focused on a variety of topics. Mentorship is paramount in a program like this — fellows will learn the necessary skills around reporting, editing, digital strategy, and visual storytelling from the very best. Each fellow will be assigned a Guardian journalist as a mentor with whom they will meet at least once per month to discuss their progress and work.

Fellows will receive regular training on media law and investigative techniques, including career development with managing editor Dana Canedy. They will also learn to use back-end tools for the Guardian’s content management and audience data.

“We are delighted to support early-career students and alumni of The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism with this important fellowship and look forward to welcoming the first fellow soon,” said Dana Canedy.

Guardian US is headquartered in New York City, where the team works diligently to connect US voices to a wider international audience. The fellowship will be based in New York though fellows may visit offices in Washington, D.C., or Los Angeles.

The fellowship is made possible with support from the Scott Trust. It’s also part of a decade-long restorative justice program that Guardian launched in response to its Legacies of Enslavement report, which established clear links between the publication’s founders and transatlantic slavery.

The Guardian US Scott Trust Fellowship aims to increase editorial diversity and inclusion as part of The Guardian’s mission to increase opportunities for underrepresented journalists. We encourage journalists with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences to apply.
