The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY is pleased to welcome Ken Auletta and Shuwei Fang as Senior Fellows.
Senior Fellows are accomplished leaders from journalism, media, technology, and related fields who share their expertise with the Newmark J-School community through teaching, mentorship, public events, and special projects.
Ken Auletta is one of the nation’s most influential media journalists and authors. A longtime staff writer for The New Yorker, Auletta has spent decades chronicling the evolution of media, technology, business, and political power. His reporting and books have shaped public understanding of transformative figures and institutions, including Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, Microsoft, Google, and Facebook. Auletta is the author of thirteen books, including five national bestsellers. His work has earned numerous honors, and he has long been recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of the media industry and its impact on society.
Shuwei Fang is co-founder of Signals at Scale, a mission-driven venture studio building infrastructure for the AI-mediated information ecosystem. She joins Newmark J-School from the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School, where she is a fellow focused on the new economics of information. Over more than a decade, Fang has worked to strengthen the information environment through grantmaking and impact investing, drawing on earlier experience in the private sector and startups. She co-led two global efforts to examine how artificial intelligence may fundamentally reshape journalism and public information over the long term: the Signals at Scale summit series and the AI in Journalism Futures scenario-planning projects.
As Senior Fellows, Auletta and Fang will engage with students, faculty, and the broader journalism community, including through master classes and conversations on the forces transforming media, technology, and democracy.

Auletta and Fang are the first Senior Fellows appointed by Newmark J-School since the late John Thornton, whose service as fellow reflected his commitment to nurturing the next generation of journalists and local news leaders. Their appointments reflect the school’s commitment to engaging with leading voices and minds to collectively figure out the future of journalism.
