Being a journalist today means understanding visuals and mastering photo and video storytelling techniques for the web and on social media. Self-isolation and uncertainty in this pandemic is making visual storytelling even more difficult.
In this intensive, one-week class, you will learn digital techniques, new technologies and professional standards, including best-practices for online visual reporting, understanding archive searches and social media promotion. The class will also cover resources for video journalists, journalism students and others stuck at home, including how to find and use copyright-free, royalty-free and user-generated footage in your work and how to produce compelling video content even when you can’t produce original content.
The schedule will begin with an overview of resources and progress to each participant producing a publishable project by the workshop’s conclusion.
In addition to the course times below, participants should plan on an estimated two hours a day for project work, asynchronous review of tutorial videos and one-on-one or small group discussion. Participants will need a computer, a mobile phone and sufficient Internet bandwidth for video streaming. The tools used in the workshop are all free, and the material produced can be published and will be owned by the participant.
