Legal, Ethics and Safety

Course Details

The class will be evenly divided between three areas: legal considerations, ethical issues and risk and safety assessment. The class will consider ethical dilemmas in journalism, tackling concepts like objectivity and independence, and addressing biases stemming from factors that include gender, religion, political affiliation and race. It will provide an introduction to the First Amendment and legal protections afforded journalists in the U.S. and provide instruction on international legal principles around freedom of expression. In addition, this class will engage with issues of threats to journalists and press freedom in the United States and around the world. These include physical attacks, legal action, and systematic campaigns of online harassment.  This class will teach students to conduct thorough risk assessments. Students will master the basic elements of digital security, including those related to the protection of sources.
