Have you dreamed of being a documentary filmmaker, a TV news reporter, or an audio storyteller? Or maybe you aspire to be a data journalist committed to investigative data reporting—gathering and analyzing data to unearth powerful public information?
The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York will start you on your journey. You can choose from a variety of media specializations in addition to your subject concentration, taught by some of the finest practitioners in the field.
Who better to teach the art of documentary journalism than the founder of the J-School Documentary Program, filmmaker Yoruba Richen, a winner of the 2023 Peabody award.
Maybe you want to learn more about data journalism from Sandeep Junnarkar, Director of the Data Journalism Program, who is committed to getting students excited and inspired about data, how it uncovers patterns in our everyday lives, and the role it plays in the newsroom.
Or perhaps you want to gain skills in audio reporting and podcasting under the direction of Director Kalli Anderson, Audio Producer, Editor, and Filmmaker? Her proven dedication to advising and editing student-produced work has led to students receiving multiple national student journalism awards.
And who wouldn’t want to work closely with Emmy Award winner and Associate Professor of Broadcast Journalism, Vanessa Botelho—learning how to report on camera as a video journalist, how to write on deadline for local television, digital and streaming news, and how to put together a local news reporter package.
Our extensive curriculum allows you to develop proficiency in whatever journalistic track compels you. Read on to find out more about our visual journalism (documentary and TV News), audio journalism and data journalism specializations and how to make one of them your area of expertise.
