The Black Media Initiative will be hosting the second annual Black Media Futures conference, a half-day virtual event to be held on March 14 in commemoration of the 197th anniversary of the establishment of the Black press. Building on last year’s conversations, the conference will delve into the present challenges and future prospects of Black media.
Marking March 16, 1827 as a pivotal moment, when two visionary Black men inaugurated the Freedom’s Journal in New York City, our event acknowledges the profound impact of their pioneering endeavor and aims to emulate their ethos. As Black media confronts challenges similar to those faced by its progenitors, the need for conversation and strategy becomes imperative to ensure our sector thrives for future generations.
“Now, more than ever, it is critical that we come together to chart the course for the future of Black media,” said Cheryl Thompson-Morton, director of the Black Media Initiative. “This event aims to not only honor the rich legacy of the Black press but also lay the groundwork for its continued relevance to audiences and resilience in the face of adversity.”
Against the backdrop of an evolving journalism landscape and the unique challenges confronting Black communities, the conference serves as a crucial forum for dialogue. Attendees will engage in discussions on a number of topics, guided by esteemed speakers and panelists:
- The Black Vote – Shaping Democracy’s Future: With the 2024 election looming large, the session will explore how Black media influences the trajectory of democracy. Dr. Christine Slaughter, an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Boston University and renowned for her expertise in race and politics, will provide invaluable insights.
- Reparations for Black Media: Addressing the pressing issue of financial support for Black media, experts will deliberate on historical challenges, contemporary opportunities, and the ethical imperative of reparations as a means of rectifying historical injustices.
- Leveraging AI for Impact: Delving into the intersection of technology and media, this session will explore how Black media can harness artificial intelligence to enhance storytelling while mitigating potential biases and ethical concerns.
- Freelancer Networking Session: Designed to facilitate collaborations, this session offers Black freelancers a platform to showcase their talents and pitch ideas to industry leaders.
Beyond the exploration of these important issues, the conference serves to honor the path forged by the Black media of the past while envisioning its future trajectory. The event will also provide a vital platform for networking and collaboration among Black media professionals.
