In a year in which four billion people are scheduled to vote in 25 elections, the world already looks very different.
This three-part series on Covering Elections from the Journalism Protection Initiative at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism will focus on press freedom and the safety challenges of reporting on the U.S. election. The series is co-sponsored by the Center for Community Media.
“Covering Elections” is part of a range of public programming from the Newmark J-School which will examine the media’s role from every angle.
Protecting Whistleblowers in High-Stakes Reporting

There is hardly a more complex relationship than the one between a journalist and a whistleblower. For journalists the obligation to report with integrity while protecting sources takes on even more critical importance during an election year.
This unique conversation will feature John Carreyrou, investigative journalist who broke the Theranos story, and Erika Cheung, one of the key whistleblowers in that case. They will be joined by Margaux Ewen, deputy legal director of The Signals Network. Panelists will use the Theranos case as a springboard to discuss the potential impact of whistleblowers, the heightened risks around elections, and the ethical considerations journalists must navigate. The conversation with be moderated by Joel Simon, founding director of the Journalism Protection Initiative.
