As audio journalists, we go where the story is. And wherever we find ourselves, we need to know how to capture high-quality sound recordings. In this 5-week workshop, you will be introduced to the range of specialized microphones and accessories available at the school and their applications in the field. We will learn to record sound in challenging scenarios (high wind, loud protests, multiple interviewees, an interviewee on the move…) and we’ll learn how to plan for and execute our sound gathering strategies to get the material we need to create clear and evocative scenes and soundscapes that use the power of sound to its full potential and draw our audience into our audio stories. This course will include hands-on instruction with a range of microphones, accessories and professional audio recording set-ups. It includes outdoor workshops and homework assignments and students will be expected to come dressed for the weather. Students will use ProTools to produce sound-rich scenes and soundscapes using their field recordings.
Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Plan their equipment list and approach for a variety of situations recording in the field.
- Choose, test and operate professional-grade audio recording equipment.
- Confidently record and monitor audio while reporting in the field, even in challenging, evolving situations.
- Log, manage and archive their field recordings.
- Use field recordings to create scenes and soundscapes in ProTools that enliven their journalism and audio storytelling.
