In this class, students will use ProTools to take the mixing and mastering of their audio stories to a professional level using equalization, compression and other industry-standard plugins. Students will learn track management and routing and how to master their projects to conform with industry loudness standards for a variety of distribution platforms. Students will learn how to use ProTools plugins to troubleshoot common audio-quality issues in recordings that were made reporting in the field. This 5-week module will culminate with each student producing a short sound-rich audio scene mixing voice, ambient/natural sound and narration that is edited, mixed and mastered to a professional standard. Students will leave this class confident in their ability to produce sound-rich, multi-track audio stories using audio recordings made in a variety of reporting scenarios.
This is a prerequisite for Advanced Sound Design offered in the Fall semester.
Course outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Mix and master audio stories to a professional standard.
- Use industry-standard plugins and tools in ProTools to troubleshoot common audio quality issues
- Produce multi-track, sound-rich audio scenes using recordings made in the field and in studio
- Deliver final audio mixes ready for distribution on a variety of platforms
