A cohort of 30 teachers from 30 public high schools in New York City has been selected to participate in the Journalism For All Professional Development starting this month at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.
Journalism For All is an ambitious initiative by the Youth Journalism Coalition to support high school journalism and grow the journalism pipeline in the United States. The 30 teachers will receive six months of training as well as continued support as they start teaching a year-long journalism course at their high schools in the Fall of 2025.
Just under 27% of New York City public high schools have a student news publication, compared with over a decade ago, when 50% of NYC public high schools had a newspaper and/or a journalism program (according to studies by Baruch College Prof. Geanne Belton and Brooklyn College Prof. Jessica Siegel). What’s worse, only 7 of the 100 schools with the highest poverty rates have a student publication.
The Journalism for All teacher training is led by Katina Paron, a foremost expert in teen journalism, and J+, the professional arm of the Newmark J-School and supported by The Charles H. Revson Foundation.

- Marie Bresowsky is an English teacher and the yearbook advisor at Port Richmond High School on Staten Island.
- Margaret Caban is a teacher at United Charter for the Humanities in Manhattan. She has written freelance stories for music fanzines and was the editor in chief of a community newspaper in the Bronx.
- Alisha Castillo is a teacher at Teachers Preparatory High School in Brooklyn.
- Marisa Castillo is a teacher at Urban Assembly School of Music and Art in Brooklyn, and her first passion was music journalism.
- Lauren Crowe is the high school librarian at Brooklyn Emerging Leaders Academy.
- James Felder-Salvador is an English teacher and the work-based learning coordinator at Gotham Tech High School in Queens.
- Andrew Flanagan is a teacher at A School Without Walls in Manhattan.
- David Fulco is an 11th and 12th grade English teacher at Laboratory School of Finance and Technology in the Bronx.
- Teamare Gaston is a teacher at Lower East Side Prep who studied journalism in college and writes about her travels.
- Lunx Girgado co-teaches English at ATLAS High School in Queens.
- Mabel Harriman-Smith is an English teacher at High School for Excellence and Innovation in Manhattan.
- Michael Inoa is a teacher and journalism advisor at John Dewey High School in Brooklyn.
- Jillian King is a middle and high school English and special education teacher at Park Slope Collegiate in Brooklyn.
- Sydney Kukoda is a 10th Grade ELA and AP literature teacher at the High School for Global Citizenship in Brooklyn and works with their student newspaper, HSGC Today.
- Kristin Lawlor is an ENL and journalism teacher at The Young Women’s Leadership School of The Bronx. She co-facilitates the student-run magazine, “In the Loop.”
- Christian Lewis is an English teacher at the High School of Telecommunication Arts & Technology in Brooklyn who also teaches the school’s newspaper class.
