Introduction to AI Tools (60 minutes):
We’ve been using AI tools for years and haven’t even realized it. But the influx of tools flooding the market raise opportunities as well as ethical and legal concerns. In this presentation/workshop, we’ll approach AI with “cautious curiosity” and learn how to harness the tools to save you time and work. We’ll work basic editing tools; writing prompts and updates to tools such as Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and others. We’ll also explore some pitfalls of AI tools and the legal/ethical issues surrounding them.
Prompt Writing (60 minutes):
Short presentation with more-extensive tips, then examples and plug-play exercises on writing prompts for ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc. Some talk on ethics/legal issues, etc. We’ll cover how to write prompts that prevent hallucinations/biases with AI tools, and how to train ChatGPT to present information in a format that you want it to.

Instructor
Mike Reilley is the author of two books, “Data + Journalism: A Story-Driven Approach to Learning Data Reporting” and “Journalist’s Toolbox: A Guide to Digital Reporting and AI”. Mike teaches data and digital journalism courses at the University of Illinois Chicago. He is also a digital tools trainer who has taught Google News Initiative tools to more than 12,500 journalists and educators in the past seven years. He also is the founder of Penny Press Digital LLC, a digital consulting and training company that works with media outlets such as USA Today. A former reporter and copy editor at the LA Times and a founding editor of ChicagoTribune.com, Mike served for 13 years as a full-time faculty member at Northwestern, Arizona State University and DePaul University. He holds journalism degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Northwestern University. Mike founded the research site The Journalist’s Toolbox AI.
