The J–School’s NYCity News Service this week launched the Hate Index (www.hateindex.com), a site that chronicles hate crimes and other acts of intolerance committed since Donald Trump’s presidential election victory.
Our faculty-led team of student volunteers is scouring news accounts to create a searchable database of incidents to help provide scope, context and insight amid growing reports of hatred-in-action.
The idea is to tally as many verifiable incidents as possible, categorize them and let site visitors slice and dice the data points (e.g. location, type of incident, etc.) in various ways.
The Hate Index so far includes about a week’s worth of reports, post-Nov. 8, 2016. Our team plans to keep adding to our growing database in the weeks to come.
The project is the brainchild of J-School Interactive Program Director Sandeep Junnarkar and News Director Jere Hester, who spearheaded the development of the Hate Index with the guidance of Chief Librarian Barbara Gray.
“We’re disturbed by the reported accounts of intolerance and outright hate crimes in New York and around the country,” said Junnarkar. “The Hate Index represents our response as journalists determined to shed light wherever we can.”
