This course will use the concept of “weak theory” advanced geographer J.K. Gibson-Graham, who suggested that all-encompassing theories make us incapable of seeing things that the theories don’t explain (for example, if our understanding of what we call “the economy” is limited to wage labor, we can’t see barter, community, and cooperative economic relationships). Students will pitch, report, and write “weak theory” stories. We will also discuss what “strong theories”—existing narratives and assumptions in media – have rendered these stories hard to see.
