Do you have long-covid and are wondering how you can be a successful journalist while navigating your health? Women in Media presents a special event featuring Carolyn Van Houten.
Carolyn is a staff photojournalist at The Washington Post and is based in Washington D.C. She got diagnosed with COVID-19 in the early stages of the pandemic while on the campaign trail with Joe Biden.
In a photographic essay for The Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/08/26/long-covid-chronic-symptoms-fatigue/), she revealed that she has long-covid symptoms and as a result has chronic health issues. In this discussion, she will share how she handles working in the industry while managing her health and more.

Carolyn Van Houten’s Bio:
Van Houten’s work primarily focuses on the impact of immigration, health, and climate on communities. After growing up on a farm in rural North Carolina, she studied journalism at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining The Post, she was the photo intern at National Geographic and a staff photojournalist at the San Antonio Express-News covering south and west Texas. Her work has been recognized by the Overseas Press Club’s Robert Capa Gold Medal, RFK Human Rights Award, Forbes 30 Under 30 in Media, Pictures of the Year International’s Newspaper Photographer of the Year, among others. She worked on three of the stories in the 2C: Beyond the Limit series that won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting.
