The Center for Community Media is organizing a training on identifying fake AI-generated images and videos, as part of CCM’s AI-related trainings. These trainings are aimed at giving community and ethnic media the resources and knowledge to help deal with the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities of AI.
In light of the 2024 US elections, this training is particularly timely and crucial. Though fears of AI-generated content swaying electorates have been fully realized to date, there remain potential challenges to electoral integrity and public trust in media. At this critical period, community newsrooms need to be equipped with the skills to detect and debunk false or misleading AI-generated visual content.
This training will empower journalists to maintain the highest standards of accuracy and reliability in their election coverage, ensuring that their communities have access to trustworthy information during this important time.
In this training, you will learn the following:
- Fundamentals of generative visual AI and its relevance to community newsrooms
- Techniques and tools for detecting AI-generated visuals (fakes)
- Discussion of state-of-the-art case studies
- Current industry trends and challenges for small and community publications
- Templates and ideas for developing an effective visual AI policy for your newsroom
- Overview of popular visual AI tools

Instructor
John Smock is the Director of Photojournalism at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. Before taking the position at Newmark, Smock was a photographer with the Associated Press and SIPA Press, a photo agency with offices in New York City and Paris. Since joining the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism he has expanded his expertise into social video and animations for news. Smock has worked as a journalism trainer in several former Soviet Republics, Cambodia, Libya and Afghanistan. He continues to work on grant-based visual projects on a range of topics and on a range of platforms.
