Carmel Balan joined the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism in August 2021, following her role as Deputy Chief of Staff to the CIO at Hunter College. She has over 12 years of working experience within the CUNY system.
Reporting directly to the Assistant Dean of Administration and Finance, Carmel leads the procure-to-pay process within a shared services framework, overseeing key procurement functions including but not limited to travel and expense management, accounts payable, capital projects, and CUNY card transactions across various departments to support students, faculty and staff. She is also a member of the college’s Technology Committee.
In her previous role within the IT department at the J-School, Carmel managed IT procurement and served as the Application Security Liaison, oversaw security access for staff across financial, human capital, and campus solutions modules in CUNYfirst.
Carmel is passionate about public and higher education administration and is an advocate for public interest and transformational leadership.
She has a B.A. in Political Science from Hunter College and lives in Brooklyn.
