Nigel brings to the team a substantial background in data journalism and nearly two decades of meaningful experience helping readers understand complex topics with visuals, maps, and interactives. Most recently, he was the Senior Editor of Data Visualization at NBC News Digital, where he led the Data Graphics department and oversaw initiatives tracking the U.S. housing market, childhood vaccination rates, and live election data.

Nigel has previously worked as a graphics reporter at The Wall Street Journal and a visual journalist at DNAinfo New York, and he has taught digital media at The New School. He holds an M.S. in Digital Media from the Columbia University School of Journalism and a B.F.A. in Communication Arts from the New York Institute of Technology. His career includes building complex, award-winning public service tools, from interactive hurricane trackers to automated civic monitoring pipelines, earning recognition from the Webby Awards and the Editor & Publisher Awards.

Nigel’s work has focused on leveraging technology to empower newsrooms and expand visual data transparency. He brings a measured, strategic approach to generative AI that centers equity, ethical workflows, and localized data sovereignty, ensuring community newsrooms are empowered to lead the next technological wave. His unique technical expertise and commitment to local storytelling align perfectly with the Center for Community Media’s strategic pillars to help the sector build collective power.
