Stephanie Wang-Breal is a writer and director who uses film as a tool to subvert the narrative. Her work explores institutions and the people who reside at the core of these institutions.
Stephanie’s feature films include Wo Ai Ni Mommy (2010), Tough Love (2014), Blowin’ Up (2018) and the short film installations: Sounds of Summer (2020) and Sounds of Fall (2020). Wo Ai Ni Mommy was awarded the SilverDocs Grand Jury Prize, the SFIAAFF Best Documentary Award, as well as an Emmy nomination. Blowin’ Up was a New York Times’ critics pick and received the Society of Authors Award at the Film Des Femmes Festival in Paris, France. Each of her films were broadcast on PBS’ POV.
Stephanie is currently directing an episode for Art 21 — a PBS’ award-winning television series that focuses on contemporary visual art and artists. She is also working on a feature hybrid film, Florence from Ohio, which she co-wrote with David Teague and producers Mynette Louie, Derek Nguyen and Carrie Weprin. Currently, she is writing and directing a narrative feature with Ley Line Entertainment and producer Ted Hope.
Stephanie’s work has been supported by the Sundance Institute, the Ford Foundation, NYSCA, NBC Diversity Fellows, Asian Women’s Giving Circle and the Jerome Foundation. She is the recipient of a 2019 Chicken & Egg Artist Award, as well as a 2020 Creative Capital Artist Award and a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. This year she received a 2024 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in the Film and Video category from the The New York Foundation for the Arts. Stephanie has written and directed commercial campaigns for Target, Planned Parenthood and Hewlett Packard. She is a member of AMPAS and the WGA. She resides in Brooklyn, New York, with her son and daughter.
