Stephen Maing is an Emmy-award winning filmmaker. His films UNION (P.O.V./Criterion Channel) and CRIME + PUNISHMENT (Hulu) both won Special Jury Awards at the Sundance Film Festival and were shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary. Maing’s films seek to expand the aesthetic form and limits of longitudinal nonfiction filmmaking. They are visual investigations of societal phenomenon, complex power structures and the fascinating individuals who challenge them. He was story producer and an editor on the Oscar-winning short doc ALL THE EMPTY ROOMS (Netflix). His most recent film, THE GREAT EXPERIMENT, made over a decade, is a cinematic account of American life during one of the most volatile and perplexing eras of US history & identity. Maing has received fellowships from The Guggenheim Foundation, United States Artists, Sundance Institute, NBC Original Voices, and was recipient of the IDA’s prestigious Courage Under Fire Award.
