A special report examining challenges facing migrants earned one of four first-place awards captured by Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism news outlets in a competition run by the National Association of Black Journalists.
Work produced by Newmark students also garnered five honors in the Associated Collegiate Press’s national Clips & Clicks awards.
Among the J-School’s winners in NABJ’s Salute to Excellence Awards, announced Aug. 3 during the group’s annual conference, held in Chicago:
- The Newest New Yorkers, a NYCity News Service cross-class examination of the the challenges facing migrants, topped the Best Use of Multimedia — Special Project category.
- Community of Dance, Zakiyyah Woods’ photo essay from the News Service’s Photobridge collaboration with ENS Louis Lumiere in Paris, won the Photography — Multiple Images category.
- Mark Banchereau’s lead photo from the News Service Stranded in Senegal headed the Photography – Single Image category.
- The New York Stories installment of the J-School’s 219West TV Newsmagazine won for Best Newscast.
Among the Newmark winners in the ACP competition, announced Aug. 5:
- Christian Nazario’s AudioFiles piece $40M on Deck to Help Farmers Combat Food Insecurity placed second in the Broadcast News Story category.
- Matthew Ferrera’s New Service video Art Exhibit Dismantles Stereotypes of Incarcerated People notched third-place honors for Broadcast Feature Story.
- Graphics that Daniel Katzive produced for two stories from The Newest New Yorkers project — A Heavy Mental Health Tool and The Never-Ending Journey — took fourth- and fifth-place, respectively, in the Informational Graphic category.
- Truth Headlam’s News Service piece From Starting Line to Starting Over placed fifth in the Sports Story category.
The victories came less than a month after the J-School took home awards in national competitions run by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Society of Professional Journalists.
