In this advanced workshop course, students work on production teams to collaboratively produce stand-alone narrative episodes for limited run podcast series. Students research and pitch a narrative episode idea appropriate for the podcast theme and mandate. They then work in teams to produce the episodes and take on roles that reflect industry practices, working as reporters, producers, hosts and sound designers. In this course, there is a focus on longform, documentary-style audio storytelling produced to a professional standard. The course includes instruction in story pitching and development, longform interviewing, field-recording and high-quality remote recording, writing, editing and mixing techniques. This course prepares students for work on highly-produced narrative podcast series (This American Life, Ear Hustle, Serial, Snap Judgment…) and as radio documentary reporters and producers.
