Can We Stop Online Harassment?
Co-sponsored by Freedom of the Press Foundation and the Kettering Foundation
Campaigns of online harassment have become a key election tool, used to intimidate and punish critical reporters. Female, queer journalists and journalists of color are particularly vulnerable. News organizations initially responded to online harassment by encouraging social media platforms to remove harmful content and implement policies to protect users from abuse. Now, more journalists and news organizations are providing journalists with tools to manage their online profiles, suppress hate on their timelines, and prepare themselves emotionally for the inevitable onslaught. This session, featuring a panel of experts and journalists, will look at how the strategies and tactics of self defense have evolved, and what journalists can do in this shifting landscape to protect themselves online.
