AI presents possibilities and obstacles for community journalism. Within this evolving landscape, newsrooms have opportunities to use AI to optimize and enhance newsroom work and editorial content. However, alongside these developments, the proliferation of disinformation, misinformation, and fake content is on the rise.
This 90-minute training session aims to examine how newsrooms can ethically use AI-generated visuals while also keeping issues and risks in mind.
The session will cover the following topics:
- Hands-on and practical instruction on how to begin to introduce visual AI tools into your newsroom.
- Case studies about how other publications, especially community publications, are using visual AI tools.
- Ethical and professional guidelines for using visual AI tools, most notably around topics like elections, protests and other sensitive material.
- Tools and tips for verifying the veracity of visuals for your readers.
- What’s next? How do you “future proof” your publication in such a rapidly changing media space?
This training has been developed by the Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, and is funded by the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. If you have any questions, contact .
