In the last five years, Puerto Rico has been roiled by a series of crises—from a bankrupt economy to a government beleaguered by failed leadership and a hurricane that decimated the island. A panel of journalists will examine how well the media has covered these connected challenges as well as the island’s ongoing attempts to restructure and recover.
Instead of waiting until November, a panel of experts moderated by Newmark J-School Professor Peter Beinart will post-mortem coverage of the 2020 election at the outset so maybe this time the media gets it right.
With the upcoming 2020 election and census, the Newmark J-School is hosting a day-long training by our partner, First Draft, to prepare journalism students in identifying, verifying, and responsible reporting of disinformation that they may encounter covering these national events.

The panel, organized by the Center for Community Media at the Newmark J-School, will focus on the measures being taken to protect NYC, how organizations are dealing with the outbreak, the rumors surrounding the virus threat, and how local businesses have been affected.
This is a training workshop that covers Facebook tools for emerging journalists, including Facebook Live, Groups, Video, Insights and Safety features. Students and faculty will learn how these tools can offer to create and share their work, along with ways to engage the public in the stories about their communities.
