National Initiatives 

For the past five years, CCM’s national work was primarily carried out within our incredible and impactful Black, Asian, and Latino Media Initiatives. These initiatives are winding down in 2025, as CCM undergoes a  process of strategic planning to determine how we can continue to  support our Initiative media partners in the coming years, while also serving those in community media who never had their own initiatives Sign up for CCM’s newsletters and follow us on social media channels for updates about our new strategic vision, coming in early 2026.

Black Media Initiative

Black Media Initiative

Founded in 2020, the Black Media Initiative (BMI) supported Black-led news organizations across the country with research, training, and networking to advance sustainability and digital innovation. BMI built critical resources—including The Black Media Green Book—and elevated the visibility of Black media as a cornerstone of local journalism.

Asian Media Initiative

The Asian Media Initiative (AMI) was launched in 2022 and worked to strengthen journalism serving Asian American and Pacific Islander communities through research like the first-ever historical report of AAPI media, Origins and Futures, mapping, and professional development. Its groundbreaking national directory and identified more than 700 outlets publishing in 54 languages.

Latino Media Initiative (LMI)

Originally emerging from Newmark J-School’s bilingual Spanish language Master’s program, the Latino Media Initiative (LMI) was formally established in 2017. The LMI sought to empower Latino-serving news outlets through research, leadership development, and convenings such as the bilingual Latino Media Summit. The initiative helped shape national conversations on equity, representation, and innovation in Latino journalism.
