Students at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism now have more choices in media courses throughout the curriculum than ever before. They have the opportunity to concentrate in one media format — print, broadcast, or interactive — but they are also free to choose courses across formats, depending on their interests and career goals.
They do have to pick a subject concentration before the start of the second semester in one of five specialties: arts & culture, business & economics, health & medicine, international, or urban reporting.
In general, all students follow the same curriculum in the first semester. In the second and third semesters, schedules will vary depending on subject concentration, media interests, and electives.
Here is a generic course of study that shows the categories of classes that students will take over the three semesters.
Semester I (all required courses)
Craft of Journalism I (6 credits)
Legal and Ethical Issues
Fundamentals of Multimedia Journalism (6 credits)
Semester 2
Craft of Journalism II or Craft II – Broadcast (6 credits) (required)
One course in student’s subject concentration
Two electives, including media courses
Summer
Summer Internship
Semester 3
Two courses in student’s subject concentration
Two electives, including media courses
Students are allowed to take courses in other subject concentrations with the approval of their advisers and the directors of the subject concentrations affected.
Students may choose to stay beyond a third semester to allow them to take additional courses at the J-School, at another CUNY college, or in an exchange program at a foreign journalism school. Those who do so need to work out the sequencing of their courses over a four-semester time frame with their academic adviser.
Please keep in mind that students will have the opportunity to take additional instruction in various media specialties – from photography to Flash and others – in the January Academy following graduation and in workshops that may be offered throughout the year for students and graduates.
