Visiting Student Options (Non-Degree & e-Permit)

The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism offers opportunities for individuals to enroll in graduate-level journalism courses without pursuing a full degree. These students are considered visiting students.

Please note that visiting students do not have access to all the same resources as degree-seeking students, such as financial aid, certain on-campus events, career advising through Career Services, or access to certain technical equipment unless it is required for their enrolled course(s).

There are two visiting student pathways:

  • Non-Degree Students: Individuals who are not currently enrolled at any CUNY institution
  • e-Permit Students: Students who are currently enrolled at another CUNY campus

All visiting students are held to the same academic expectations as degree students.

  • Tuition is required; auditing or sitting in on classes  is not permitted
  • Students must complete coursework, participate in class discussions, and will receive a grade at the end of the semester

HOW TO APPLY (Non-Degree Students)

  • First, inquire about available courses open to visiting students for the specific term by emailing:
  • After confirming availability, submit an online application with a non-refundable $75 application fee at least six weeks before the start of the semester
  • Enrollment is not guaranteed, and courses require instructor approval
  • Students may also schedule a meeting with the academic advisor after initial contact for additional guidance

Tuition is charged per credit

CUNY e-Permit Students

An e-Permit is CUNY’s system that allows students to request permission to take a course at another CUNY institution.

  • Required for concurrent enrollment at multiple CUNY schools
  • Submission of an e-Permit request does not guarantee enrollment in the course
  • Final approval is determined by the course instructor and area head, based on the student’s academic background

  • Host School: The CUNY institution where you wish to take a course
